When a modern Venice Beach home changed hands, its new owners sought a transformation that balanced their lifestyle with the neighborhood’s vibrant character. They turned to the original architects to refine the structure with an “archaeological approach,” preserving its essence while introducing thoughtful updates. Custom furnishings by local artisans, including bespoke pieces from Abbot Kinney’s Stahl and Band, root the home in its artistic surroundings.

The original design featured a privacy-centric solid façade on one side and open structures with a pool on the other, linked by an accordion glass wall to fuse indoor and outdoor living. A wrap-around deck and two overhangs were added for increased liveability, one over an existing patio space and another over a carport converted to outdoor living space. The new bedroom was skillfully integrated above the covered area, appearing as if it was always there.

Originally designed to house a bibliophile’s collection, the living room now embodies contemporary LA living. A towering bookshelf and wood-burning fireplace were replaced with a sleek, modern fireplace framed by veneered wall panels and vertical wooden slats. This design aligns with adjacent glazing, integrating a concealed heat return system that meets California Green Building Code requirements while preserving the home’s minimalist aesthetic

The renovation merges comfort with innovation through advanced heating and cooling systems. Radiant hot water pipes beneath the floors provide year-round warmth, while selective cooling on the upper levels offers relief during summer months. Thoughtful design maximizes natural ventilation, inviting ocean breezes and the scents of surrounding gardens.
