Surveying The Periphery

An Analysis Of Alternative/adjacent Design Services

Type
:
Lecture Series
Year
:
2020-22
Team

Akhil Mathew

Surveying the Periphery comprises of a series of lectures presented to the Abramson Architects team. The topic of the series is the revelation and review of a variety of services that fall under the umbrella term “Architecture” from within the practice itself. The series arises from the presumption that a team of practicing architects with a contemporary understanding of the functioning of the profession may not necessarily be thinking about similar and adjacent disciplines and key services that utilize precisely the same skills, interests, psychologies, education, and expertise as architects.  At the same time, the architecture profession is in a state of increasingly rapid change.  The role of the architect would need to adapt to changing markets, new technologies and a industry trend towards sustainable practices.  This revealed an area of potential research that could deeply benefit and enhance both the internal workings and finished products developed by the office.  This dive into adjacency in terms of practice also lead to the decision of utilizing real-time lectures as a mode of presentation and communication over the more traditional on-screen presentations, diagrams, drawings or reports.  Each lecture was delivered in the form of a review of a short but rigorous case study of an individual/architecture firm/non-profit that is engaged in one or more of these adjacent possibilities.  Each lecture establishes each subject’s functioning model and reviews major projects undertaken in terms parallel to that of Abramson Architects’ day-to-day workings in the profession.

The Four Lectures include:

Intro – An analysis of alternative/adjacent design services

The Architecture-Adjacent Firm

The Architecture-Adjacent Non-Profit

The Architecture-Adjacent Individual
