An Eclectic Take on Mid-Century Modern

With twin babies on the way, our clients needed to expand their 1958 post and beam residence. The multi-phased project originally added a master suite and updated the lower level to create two separate bedrooms. Subsequent efforts, after the birth of their girls, added a home theater, office, and workout room to the mid-century home. To maintain the home’s existing harmony with the Crestwood Hills Architectural Guidelines, the new portions incorporate earth-tone stucco in sage gray, painted wood beams, low-pitched roofs, and lush landscaping. And due to the nature of the secluded down-slope lot, no portion of the addition is visible from the street.

Each of the architectural moves to the original mid-century footprint was done with respect to the original Gilbert & Kearney design. The result is a future-forward layout tailor-made to help the clients write the next chapter of their family’s story.

The master suite is relocated to its own wing beneath a butterfly slope roof that rises to a height of 14′. The gallery leading to has clerestory windows on 3 sides, creating another distinct butterfly roof that extrudes into the pool deck above. Echoing the master suite roofline, a stylish home office and gym complete the second-story structures.

The sloping lot made the client’s request for a lap pool more difficult. After exploring multiple options, the design team incorporated it on the entry side of the house with access from the roof deck. This move allows the sun to cover the roof deck and provides views from the second floor.

From its second-story perch, the home office exudes a modern treehouse vibe. The workspace faces a private patio and is surrounded on two sides by unique displays of time-honored treasures and vintage photos. Nearby, an heirloom pool table and wet bar ensure the space is ideal for both business and pleasure.

Back on the ground floor level, a landscaped yard presents the rare patch of flat land on the 13,343 SF hillside property.
